POST SECONDARY COUNSELORS

We welcome you to the WSCA Post Secondary webpage.

There are really two parts to this page. The first part will provide information about the position of Vice President for Post Secondary. The second part is an opportunity to update you on a monthly basis on all things pertaining to counseling and Post Secondary. While this is a pretty large undertaking we hope share ideas that are immediately relevant to you as a counselor, graduate student, faculty or staff member or just someone interested in school counseling.

The Post Secondary Vice President is responsible for:

  1. Activate and increase awareness of resources (such as legislation, position paper, etc.) to meet the needs of counselors in various levels. (This is the purpose for our web page-tune in often)
  2. Provide support to WSCA members on ways to use research and data as evidence of the impact of school counseling activities. (Did you know we have a research committee and also provide grant money to counselors interested in doing research?)
  3. Encourage and assist counselors in conducting research.
  4. Promote collaborative research by school counselors, teachers, administrators, and university faculties.
  5. Recognize counselors who are involved in research activities.
  6. Provide leadership and coordination for the Ethics Committee and WSCA general membership.(The board meets every other month, let us know your ideas so we can pass them on)

Post Secondary Monthly Musings

We look forward to sharing information on this site that will provide you with the following:

  1. A Source of websites that will provide you current information and technologies in working with students.

For example, in the November/December issue of ASCA School Counselor there is an excellent article by Jim Bierma, incoming ASCA president and St Paul Minnesota school counselor regarding implementing the ASCA national model and quantifying the changes that have occurred in the school because of this. Check it out.
  2. School counseling and training programs throughout the state and nation.

Did you know that many of your CESA’s provide ongoing programs related to your job as school counselors? If they don’t have a workshop that you are interested in contact them and oftentimes they will be able to find such a workshop. Also, check out outreach options through your universities for on-line courses that don’t require you to travel any further than your computer.

Also, check these out: http://www.acteonline.org (this site has excellent articles and cutting edge information for counselors regarding career and technical education)

http://www.opt2xplore.com ( this is an outstanding web-based "education tool with a purpose" for counselors, students as parents as they make career and college decisions).
  3. A resource of published articles and research topics that are cutting edge in the field of school counseling.

Is bullying something that your school continues to struggle with?
Take a look at the December 2007 Professional School Counselor, and the article titled, “How to help a bully: Recommendations for counseling the proactive aggressor.”

Wondering about how to assist teenagers in dealing with trauma?
Pick up the Fall 2007 of The Wisconsin Counselor, published by the Wisconsin Counseling Association, and review the article discussing internet tools for counselors working with teens dealing with traumatic events.
  4. A “talk list” site to ask questions and provide answers to fellow counselors about issues of concern in school counseling and in the profession.

If you have ideas that you would like to see more about you can send out an email on the Wisconsin School Counselor Association list serve, or if you would like to see something posted here then contact Bonnie at bweilandhare@morainepark.edu or Mark at mark.gillen@uwrf.edu.
